Whether you're in a committed relationship with your skincare routine or get out of bed and out the door in a matter of minutes, you’re probably aware of the importance of hydrating your skin. Skincare fanatics know the long-term benefits, while others may just want to avoid dryness and discomfort. Wherever you are on the skincare spectrum, we’re sharing our top moisturizing hacks, taking a look at what to use to moisturize skin, and teaching you how to do it in the most effective way possible.

Apply to damp skin

The function of moisturizer is to seal hydration in. Applying moisturizer while the skin is still damp has two benefits: first, hydrated skin allows greater permeability, allowing the moisturizing ingredients to be better absorbed into the skin; second, your moisturizer then seals the hydration on the skin into the skin. This maximizes its effectiveness. Use this technique on your face and body for youthful-looking skin.

Don’t forget your jaw, neck, and décolletage

The skin on your neck and décolletage is more fragile than the rest of your body, similar to the skin on your face. This makes these areas especially susceptible to sunburn, irritation, and premature signs of aging. For this reason, it's important to moisturize these areas as part of your morning and evening routine. You can use your face or body moisturizer to do this, but we recommend a formula that contains anti-aging properties for best long-term results.

Try a hydrating mask

Maybe you've been staying up late for work or had a busy social season that had you drinking a bit more than usual. Whatever the cause, dehydration can wreak havoc on your skin. One of the easiest dry skin hacks is to treat your skin to a thirst-quenching mask whenever it feels like it needs a drastic moisture boost. With a multitasking formula like Staycation Hydrating Face Mask, you can customize the degree of hydration you offer your skin. On the day-to-day, simply apply as usual twice per day. When you wake up to dry or uncomfortable skin, support it with a 10-minute hydrating mask. And when you’ve got a big event coming up, you can use it as an overnight treatment.

Tap it in

Once you’ve chosen a moisturizing product that suits your skin, there are a number of ways to moisturize your face, but we recommend tapping. Rather than slathering your moisturizer on, try applying it to clean fingers, then gently but firmly press it into your skin, starting from the center of your face and moving outwards. Not only will this encourage a deeper absorption as you physically press the product in, but it also provides light lymphatic drainage, which can help reduce excess puffiness and water retention.

Mix it with foundation

For a natural, no-makeup look, mix a few drops of your moisturizer of choice with Nude Illusion Liquid Foundation. This will provide a sheer, skin-like effect and act as a DIY tinted moisturizer. Mixing foundation with moisturizer can be done by adding some moisturizer, along with your liquid foundation, to the back of your hand and swirling it together with a clean finger or the back of a makeup brush. Next, apply the mixture to your skin and blend with a brush or sponge for a fresh, barely-there look.

Exfoliate to increase absorption

Dead skin cells and sebum build-up sit on your skin, creating a rough barrier that traps dirt in and locks moisture out. To get the best results from your moisturizer, we recommend exfoliating your skin once or twice a week using a chemical exfoliant like an AHA or BHA.

Choose a formula with humectant properties

Hydrating and moisturizing are often used interchangeably in skincare, but there are distinct differences between the two. Moisturizing ingredients lubricate the skin to prevent water from escaping, whereas hydrating ingredients attract and bind water to the skin. For best results, we recommend using a moisturizer that contains both. Dive In™ Moisturizer is formulated with a selection of humectants — including pentavitin and sodium hyaluronate — to effectively bind water to the skin for long-lasting hydration. Additionally, it contains a number of occlusives and emollients — like squalane, glycerin, and niacinamide — to create a moisture barrier that locks moisture in and prevents moisture loss. A powerful combination of 13 antioxidant-rich fruit extracts helps defend skin against damaging free radicals that cause premature aging.

Go seasonal

Regardless of your skin type, skin generally produces more oil in the hot, humid months and less in the cold, dry months. Because of this, you might want to switch up your moisturizers seasonally. During spring and summer, a lightweight formula will leave your skin feeling refreshed and comfortable, and during fall and winter, a richer formula will provide your skin the nourishment it needs while replacing lost oils and moisture.

Add self-tanning drops

Want a natural-looking tan without the orange fingers and fake-tan scent? Self-tanning drops provide a customizable tan, allowing you to skip the additional step of waiting awkwardly in your bathroom for the product to dry and then staining your bed sheets anyway. A few drops added to your moisturizing skincare routine allow you to build your tan gradually and effortlessly: 1–2 drops for a gentle glow or 3–4 for a just--back-from-the-Bahamas look.
