Beauty Basics: How To Build a Weekly Skincare Routine
By Emily Chiang | May 24, 2019You’ve heard all the skincare “facts.” Whether you’ve learned from watching YouTube videos to reading blog posts and delving into the beauty blackholes of the internet, you know which bad habits to break and have gathered many skincare know-hows. But how can we take these tips and tricks to create something magical, aka a weekly skincare routine that you can stick to? While no plan is one-size-fits-all, we’ve created an outline to help you create an effective roadmap for your weekly skincare routine. A perfect world may not exist but achieving the perfect skincare routine can!
Skin Tips
Prior to starting any skincare regime, it is important to identify what skin type you have. For example, if you have sensitive skin, it is best to avoid harsh chemicals. A great way of knowing what’s in your beauty product is by reading the ingredient list. Regardless of what skin type you have, always conduct a patch test on your neck or inner arm before using a new product. If you notice that any of the products you place on your skin causes a stinging sensation or redness, do not continue to use them.
Your Daily Skincare Routine
Before starting your weekly skincare routine, it is important to develop good daily habits. Some positive practices to build into your lifestyle are below.
Take It All Off
This is an essential habit. No matter where you wander, taking off your makeup is key to achieving your most radiant skin. Sleeping with pore-clogging irritants that latch onto your face throughout the day does major damage overnight. For your most effective nighttime skincare routine, do not skip this step.
Wash Up
Start by washing your face twice a day: morning and night. Washing your face in the morning helps to prep your skin before applying moisturizer, serum, and sunscreen. In the evening, it helps gets rid of any impurities that build up throughout the day like dirt. Using a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin, whether it’s a gel, cleansing balm or cleansing oil is crucial. Harsh cleansers will strip skin of its natural oils, leaving your skin tight and overcompensating to balance itself by overproducing oils.
Body Work
You’ve heard this before but I’ll say it again: The most crucial step to any skincare routine is to take care of your body as a whole, both inside and out. Drink water, sleep and eat clean to avoid breakouts. Do not neglect taking care of yourself. Self-care is a form of self-love and nothing beats feeling good both physically and mentally.
SPF, SPF, and more SPF
The key to achieving your perfect complexion both in the near- and long-term is by swearing by SPF. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, whether or not the sun is shining. Sunscreen helps to decrease the development of wrinkles, protects against skin cancer, and helps your skin barrier stay healthy.
So Fresh and So Clean!
You can have the perfect skincare routine but still experience constant breakouts. The reason being is that you are not paying attention to the surfaces your skin is constantly in contact with. Remember to clean your makeup brushes, disinfect your phone screen, and wash your pillowcases. There is a lot of bacteria and you don’t want to delay the process of achieving your #skingoals.
Your Weekly Skincare Routine
Now that you have a daily routine composed of good habits, following this weekly skincare routine will have you on the right track to radiant skin.
